A shift toward longer wavelengths of the spectral lines emitted by a celestial object that is caused by the object moving away from the earth. In astronomy, the universe is continuously expanding and along with that expansion, galaxies tend to move away from us. Accordingly, the light emanating from these galaxies is “redshifted.” |
